The Wonnarua Language & Culture digital archive is a space for collating and sharing information and resources on Wonnarua/Gringai language and culture from both local communities and external collecting institutions such as libraries and archives. The aim of this digital archive is for the Wonnarua Nation Aboriginal Corporation (WNAC) and the entire community to have a central place where to access content that has been written and produced about Wonnarua language and culture. That is, this archive is also the place where any community member can respond to this content and add new interpretations and stories.
The project
The Wonnarua Language and Culture Archive is part of a larger project to develop resources for the delivery of a Wonnarua/Gringai language awareness and teaching created by and for the Wonnarua and local Aboriginal community, under the language the Wonnarua Nation Aboriginal Corporation (WNAC) Board. The WNAC has formed a reference group including local knowledge holders from the local area that provides advice and guidance for this project.
How to use this archive
The WNAC manages the archive with guidance from the community on which cultural protocols to apply. This means that while this site is accessible online to everyone, it's the Wonnarua community that decides which content is visible and under which conditions.
To start enjoying the site, you can start browsing the Homepage and navigate through the category you are interested in.
Otherwise, you can start by looking through the available curated Collections or Browse all content from the main menu.
If you are interested in accessing existing language resources, read and listen to a taste of language through the Wonnarua Dictionary section.
Finally, the section Teach & Learn provides some useful resources for educators and anyone who would like to access resources to learn language online or on Country.
If you would like to find out more about the content of the archive or add stories to it please email the WNAC directly at enquiries@wonnarua.org.au
Technology
This digital archive has been built using the Mukurtu (MOOK-oo-too) content management system (CMS). Born in Tennant's Creek, Mukurtu is a free, mobile, and open-source platform built with Indigenous communities across the world to manage and share cultural heritage while respecting the appropriate cultural protocols.
More examples of community archives that have been built in Mukurtu are available on the Mukurtu showcase website.
